About Me...

Welcome to The Art Studio! My name is Kim Moncus and I have been an elementary art teacher since 2007 with Austin ISD. I hold a BFA degree from Texas State University. I truly love my Sunset Valley Family.
The art studio will be a safe and nurturing environment for our Cheetah artists to feel free to create and explore their artistic side through the use of a TAB art studio. TAB or Teaching for Artistic Behavior is a learning environment where the student is the artist and has a voice and a choice of how they will go about creating the concepts we are learning district wide. I will encourage collaborative and integrated learning through the arts along with choice based instruction. The arts enhance cognitive skills, team building, critical and creative thinking and promote learning. In the art studio we discover people, places, cultures, histories, and geographies of where diverse forms of art come from. The students are also introduced to many global, historical, and local artists through presentations, videos, prints, posters, and books. The artists and art lessons we will study will enhance and compliment the students academic lessons. Our Cheetah artists will keep an art journal throughout the year to plan projects, create a pool of ideas, and reflect on completed projects.
I feel that communication and teamwork between parents and teachers is vital. I will do my best to keep you informed and involved in your child’s art education. I am very interested in introducing SEL to our Cheetah families so they can continue the wonderful nurturing learning environment at home as well. If you need resources on this I have a lot so just ask! I will be more than happy to share with you what I have. We will not have rules, but we will have agreements that we decide on as a class at the beginning of the school year. This will help us build class community from the beginning. Clicking on the more button at the top right of this page will give you the most current art events happening here at Sunset Valley like: art field trips, art fundraisers, art contests, art at our school and in our community. Students will be in charge of creating their own ePortfolio on either BLEND or Artsonia (the code to SVE Artsonia gallery is at the bottom of my emails.
If you would like to contact me for any reason, please don't hesitate to call the art studio at 512-414-2392 or email me at kim.moncus@austinisd.org and I will return your calls and emails promptly. You can also help with adding pictures and finding information about what we are doing in the art studio by checking out our Artsonia online student art gallery with access code TRCR-NJDJ. I am looking forward to another successful and colorful year with our amazing Cheetah artists!
Artfully,
Kim Moncus
